A Tried And Tested Strategy To Write An Evaluation Essay

Evaluation essays are used for demonstrating the lack or quality of a certain place, product, business, program or service. Any type of evaluation involves forming and explaining an opinion, but it should be done in a way that doesn’t make the author sound too opinionated.

You will have to establish these 3 things:

  • Judgments
  • Evidence
  • Criteria

If you do so, you are on your way to creating an excellent investigative paper. If you have the liberty of choosing the topic by yourself try to find one that suits you and won’t present any difficulty.

Put your focus on a certain policy, product, service or business. Don’t evaluate several things at once, choose just one. It would also be helpful to have a profound or at least basic knowledge on the subject. That will make establishing evidence, criteria and judgments easier.

Body of Evaluation Essay

  1. Criteria
  2. That means you need to establish how the perfect i.e. ideal service/business/product etc should look like. Which are his characteristics? We already said that even though this is an evaluation paper and you should express your opinion, it should be as though you are too opinionated. So, establishing the ideal criteria of the product will make you seem more objective. For instance, if you are evaluating a restaurant you should establish the quality of the food, service, the price etc. Then compare the ideal with the real deal.

  3. Evidence
  4. You need evidence to support your opinion. You cannot just write you believe in something just because. Your statements must be real and explained why. Also, you need to point out how you came to the conclusion, what triggered you to think like that. Use the criteria and comparisons as well.

  5. Judgment
  6. Your judgment will tell you if that certain product, service etc meets the criteria set in the beginning. Try to see things clearly and be realistic. Don’t get carried away.

Additional Instructions

Each paragraph in the essay should consist of evaluating only one criterion. Then, in the same paragraph, you should state your judgment regarding that criterion and support it with the necessary evidence. Write several paragraphs because it is better to have more criteria and lots of evidence supporting them. You should also write the thesis about what you are evaluating. If you have clearly stated the evidence and criteria and have a clear judgment, you won’t have problems setting the thesis.
